According to the 2006 State Nonprofit Almanac published by the Urban Institute (www.nccs.urban.org) , there were about 6,817 active 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations in Mississippi and over 11,000 nonprofit organizations.  However, this data does not include most churches or religious organizations (which are not required to file the annual Form 990 to the IRS; there are probably at least 1,500 to 2,000 churches in Mississippi). Of those 6,817 organizations, many are very small, and some are multiple chapters of one type of organization. Only 2,086 of those organizations were public charities large enough to report financial information to the IRS on the Form 990 (organizations with gross receipts above $25,000).  In addition to in-state organizations, many national organizations solicit for funds in Mississippi, and must also register with the Secretary of State's office.
